A recent survey carried out by insurance giant Direct Line and sponsored by The Mirror shows that approximately 300,000 drivers in Britain have crashed due to the complete trust they place in their Satnav systems.

1.5 million motorists have suddenly taken dangerous turns on the say-so of their in-car pal, which is a frightening number considering that these systems are supposed to make driving easier.

New sentencing guidelines are now in place which crack down on drivers who kill using these navigation devices in a dangerous manner, with the possibility of two to five years imprisonment for convicted offenders.

The 14 million people who rely on Satnav devices make up more than half of Britain’s motorists so, here’s hoping they’re the half with some kind of common sense.

Unfortunately, this isn’t quite the case as death-defying feats such as driving into the path of a speeding trains and lorries making multi-vehicle-mangling U-turns on crowded roads are among the thousands of mistakes made by those putting their complete faith in the machines.

Maggie Game of Direct Line advises, "If a Satnav gives you an instruction that is likely to endanger other road users, ignore it."

While this is sound advice, it's still shocking that drivers haven’t come to this realisation before now.
